Heading east through New York, the North Country Trail comes to a grand finale of varied scenery, from regal canyons and intrepid waterfalls to jagged mountains and famous footpaths that helped shape America.

The trail moves from Pennsylvania's Allegheny National Forest into New York’s Allegany State Park, where it joins with the Finger Lakes Trail to push hikers through 390 miles of rolling hills, valley vistas and scenic waterfalls, as they pass Letchworth, Watkins Glen and R.H. Treman State Parks, Buttermilk Falls and the community of Ithaca.

Near Cortland, the trail hops from the main Finger Lakes path to the Onondaga Trail en route to the Link Trail, which leads hikers to the Old Erie Canal State Park in Canastota, east of Syracuse.

The trail follows the historic Canal's towpath for about 22 miles before exiting near Rome at Fort Stanwix National Monument to follow the Old Black River canal to Boonville, gateway to the 6-million-acre Adirondack State Park.

The route through the Adirondacks is still in process, but when finished, it figures to be a fabulous stretch through rugged mountains, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else on the North Country Trail. Finally, the trail reaches its eastern terminus at Crown Point State Historic Site, a pre-Revolutionary War British fort on the shores of Lake Champlain, with the majestic Green Mountains of Vermont within hikers’ gaze.
