Crossing into Pennsylvania, the trail continues along the North Fork of Little Beaver Creek in State Gamelands 285 en route to historic Darlington.
Before returning to the woods, the trail cuts through public and private lands to the borough of Wampum, located on the banks of Beaver River. From here, the trail leads hikers through the natural Impressionist exhibit of McConnell’s Mill State Park’s Slippery Rock Gorge -- a steep-walled ravine with a boulder-pocked bottom left behind by the draining of ancient glacial lakes -- as they make the trek from Hell’s Run to Alpha Pass. Take a breather and grab a history lesson with a tour of the old gristmill built in the 1800s.
Along the moraine of Moraine State Park, hikers can get a view of Lake Arthur, as well as a good night’s rest at the historic Davis Hollow Cabin, which is operated as a hostel by the park and North Country Trail volunteers. While in the park, retrace some of George Washington’s steps with a stop by The Old Stone House, a popular starting point for the annual Cherry Pie Hike, which celebrates the founding father’s expedition to the area.
The trail meanders through State Gamelands 95 on its way to the famously small city of Parker, on the Allegheny River. From here, hikers can choose their own adventure; the North Country Trail follows the scenic Clarion River corridor east, while the Allegheny Valley Rail Trail heads north for 40 miles before the two reconnect near the borough of Clarion.
Heading up the Toby Creek drainage, hikers will find themselves wrapped in a canopy of hemlock and pine in Cook Forest State Park along the Clarion River. At this point, the trail turns north, and Allegheny National Forest is only a day’s hike away. The forest is dominated by tall, straight Cherry trees. Keep your packs off the ground if camping; this is bear country. The path winds through Heart’s Content and Tionesta scenic areas and along the shoreline of the Allegheny Reservoir as it makes its way to the New York border.
