From the leisurely lakewalk of downtown Duluth to the rugged Sawtooth Mountains to the gentle Laurentian (north-south continental) Divide, the North Country Trail offers a cache of contrasting hiking experiences in Minnesota. Historic marks include the remnants of iron mining along the Mesabi and Vermilion ranges. Also, keep your eyes wide for Northwoods wildlife icons, including moose, whitetail deer, black bear, Canada lynx, timber wolf and bald eagles.
The trail enters Minnesota at Breckenridge and leads northeast to Maplewood State Park before heading north to the community of Frazee and the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. North of Tamarac, new trail is being built with a mix of public lands that will link with a long, continuous section through Itasca State Park, Paul Bunyan State Forest and Chippewa National Forest, also passing close to Lake George and the communities of Walker and Remer.
Heading northeast again, the route comes to the City of Grand Rapids before cutting through public and private forest lands to Ely en route to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, where the trail follows the Kekekabic and Border Route trails before heading southwest along the scenic "North Shore" of Lake Superior. The Superior Hiking Trail brings hikers through Duluth and Jay Cooke State Park before crossing into Wisconsin.
