The North Country National Scenic Trail is a premier footpath that stretches 4,600 miles linking communities, forests, and prairies across seven northern states. Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota to Crown Point, New York, the trail connects the following states: North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. Over 1700 miles of this trail have already been completed. The trail is modeled after the famous Appalachian Trail. Certified segments along the Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway include Sheyenne State Forest , Fort Ransom State Park , Valley City, and Lake Ashtabula. Work is underway by the Sheyenne River Valley Chapter of the North Country Trail Association to develop additional trail to connect the existing segments. The trail meanders through the Sheyenne Valley across rolling hills, forest, prairie, and through Valley City. Amenities along the trail include backcountry campsites, campgrounds, public recreation areas, tourist information sites, and supply stores. The trail also crosses a number of natural, historic, and cultural attractions. |
