Name
Spirit of the Woods was the runaway winner from a list of 15 suggestions for the chapter name. The phrase is a loose translation of the word "Manistee." All of the trail covered by the chapter is within the Manistee National Forest.

Our Trail
This Chapter is responsible for developing and maintaining the North Country National Scenic Trail north of Newago County to the north border of the Manistee National Forest in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Trail in this range includes segments through the Huron-Manistee National Forest and includes Manistee, Mason, Lake, and Oceana Counties. About 2/3 of our trail is north of U.S. 10 and about 1/3 south of U.S. 10.

Members
Spirit of the Woods Chapter was formed in October 1998 and is a new growing Chapter. Chapter members live in Ludington, Manistee, Scottville, Freesoil, Irons, Baldwin, and surrounding counties, as well as the Muskegon, Lansing; and Grand Rapids, areas. We even have some out of state members, so we will welcome your membership wherever you may be!

The Basics
We have 96 recorded memberships, a signed charter, grant money, approved by-laws, and big dreams. (Oh, and lots of fun!) If you wish to vote on chapter issues, and receive notices of activities by mail, and our newsletter, you need to join the NCTA. If you have not done so, and need the forms, just
contact us Anyone is welcome to join in for activities, or to come to meetings to see what we do, of course. This chapter fits geographically between the West Michigan Chapter and the Grand Traverse Hiking Club Chapter. Maintenance, upgrading and interpreting will be the main focus of the new chapter, rather than trail building.

Current Project
Our goal for this year is to continue the puncheon extension in Leitch Bayou.
