Keeping informed about issues and making comments to the Ottawa National Forest and Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (Michigan DNR)
Our area of coverage only includes less than a mile of trail in the Porkies.  However, if you'd like to be kept informed of any activities going on in the Park that involve the NCT (in "our section" or elsewhere, contact them at

Ottawa National Forest, Bergland Ranger District
The Bergland District covers the portion of the NCT from the east boundary of the Porkies to the Norwich area (trail segments 1 through 8).  The Bergland District is temporarily (let's hope!) closed, so for now I'd contact the Ontonagon District (see below) if you're interested in what's happening on the Bergland District.

Ottawa National Forest, Ontonagon Ranger District
The Ontonagon District covers the portion of the NCT from the Norwich area to the northeast end of Baraga Plains (trail segments 9 through the northwest half of section 19).

Ottawa National Forest, Kenton Ranger District
The Kenton District covers the portion of the NCT across the part of Baraga Plains which east of Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness (the southeast half of trail segment 19 and all of segment 20).

If you wish to keep informed of activities on these districts which may affect the North Country Trail there, try these sites:
Click HERE to learn how the Forest Service does planning, how to learn what's going on, and how to provide public input.
Click HERE to learn how to contact the various offices of the Ottawa National Forest.  The Bessemer Ranger District has charge of the portion of the NCT in the Black River area (west of the Porkies).

Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Copper Country State Forest
MDNR's Baraga office has responsibility for state lands on Baraga Plains, where the NCT is projected to go within the next year or two.  Contact

Martin Nelson
Michigan Department of Natural Resources
427 US 41 N
Baraga MI 49908

and ask to be put on a mailing list for upcoming compartment reviews.  Mr. Nelson has shown an interest in having the NCT cross state lands on Baraga Plains, but you might want to let him know you feel that way too.
