Segment 9, Whisky Hollow Creek to United States Mine

Length: 4.45 miles (1.35 miles from Whisky Hollow Creek to Gleason Falls Trail, 3.10 miles from Gleason Falls Trail to United States Mine)
Ownership: Mixed private and U.S. Forest Service
Responsible for maintenance: Peter Wolfe Chapter
Developments along trail: None
General description of segment: Mostly hardwoods and hemlock, with red oak common on ridges, some pine/aspen/conifer, with several bare rock areas, spectacular views, high cliffs, several beautiful stream valleys, Gleason Falls nearby, with white-blazed side trail from NCT, small waterfalls next to trail, trail crosses some talus slopes, mid-1800's mine openings (they don't go very far), spectacular view from rocky knob near trail.  Camping  is restricted to Forest Service lands (see online map and "Trail conditions..." description below); get water on private land if necessary, but camp on public land.
Trail conditions (as of 2005): Trail is well-cleared in most area and easily followed.  The entire segment is freshly blazed with either blue, plastic, nail-on diamonds (on Forest Service lands) or blue painted 2"X6" vertical blazes (on private lands).  There are also a number of rock cairns in bare rock and talus areas, and a couple of blue blazes painted on rock.  Camp ONLY in the areas with blue diamonds; blue diamonds indicate Forest Service lands.
The Gleason Falls Trail intersects the NCT where the NCT crosses Gleason Creek.  The Gleason Falls Trail, marked with white 2"X6" paint blazes, follows Gleason Creek downstream about 750 feet to the falls.  It follows the base of high rock bluffs, passing an old mine exploration adit, until descending steeply on rocks to the base of the falls.  The trail is steep and narrow, so you may wish to leave your big backpack at the trail junction.  No camping is permitted along this trail (there isn't a flat spot anyway!), as it's private land.  Great lunch spot, though.
See segment 11 info for cautions about driving Victoria Road.
