Segment 8, Norwich Road to
Whisky Hollow Creek
Length: 4.18 miles (2.03 miles from Norwich Road to
junction of trail north to FR 642, 1.80 miles from trail north to FR
642 to trail
to Victoria Road trailhead, 0.35 miles from trail to Victoria Road
trailhead to Whisky Hollow Creek)
Ownership: Mostly U.S. Forest Service, private land for
last 1/8 mile to Whisky Hollow Creek
Responsible for maintenance: Peter Wolfe Chapter
Developments along trail: Signs at Norwich Road and at
Norwich Mine Interpretive Trail junction, future sign at trail junction
1/8 mile west
of Whisky Hollow Creek, future lean-to
General description of segment: Mostly hardwood/hemlock
forest (with red oak common on ridgetops), some bare rock areas,
aspen/conifer forest near Whisky Hollow Creek, almost all hilly,
numerous spectacular views, Norwich Mine Interpretive Trail (under
construction), abundant evidence of 19th century copper mining
(off-trail to south in Norwich Mine area), beautiful stream valley
along Whisky Hollow Creek (stream drops over basalt ledges just
downstream from where trail first encounters creek (eastbound).
Nice potential campsites with spectacular views in places on bluffs,
but Whisky Hollow Creek is the only dependable year-round water source.
Please do not camp in the Whisky Hollow Creek
valley, as it is private land and
the owner does not permit camping. There are decent
campsites in the hardwoods and aspen/conifer forests on the flats about
1/8 mile west of the creek; use the creek as a water source, but please
camp elsewhere. Creek area makes a great break/lunch spot,
though. A spur trail (with blue diamonds) extends from the trail
junction northeast to a parking lot and
trailhead on Victoria Road, 2 miles east of Norwich Road and 8 miles
west
of Victoria. See segment
11 info for cautions for driving Victoria Road.
Trail conditions (as of 2005): Most of this trail is in
very good shape due to recent trail maintenance. There is no sign at present at the junction 1/8 mile
west of Whisky Hollow Creek; expect one during the summer of 2006.
Blue diamonds are present along the NCT from Norwich Road to about 300'
east
of the above-mentioned junction. From there to Whisky Hollow
Creek,
painted blue diamonds are present. If following the NCT, the spur trail
to Victoria Road ie easily missed at the above-mentioned
junction. White rectangular blazes may be apparent at the
junction, if looking north. The junction is perhaps 300 feet (?)
west of where the blue diamonds start (westbound), near where the trail
starts
going uphill more steeply (again, going westbound), and in the lower
portion
of the more open hardwoods. The spur trail to Victoria Road parking lot
is probably in fair shape. It may be
hard to follow where it crosses Whisky Hollow Creek, however.
