Segment 21, East Boundary of
Ottawa National Forest to Plains Road
Length: 2.75 miles (approx.). 1 mile (+/-) from
Forest
boundary to side trail to Oren Krumm Shelter, 0.71 miles from Oren
Krumm
Shelter Trail to Tibbets Falls, 1.07 miles from Tibbets Falls to Plains
Road)
Ownership: Wisconsin Electric Power Company and
Michigan DNR
Responsible for maintenance: Peter Wolfe Chapter
Developments along trail: Sign at FR 2233 at east
forest boundary, Oren Krumm Shelter Area along Sturgeon River, Big Lake
State Forest Campground, bridge over side stream, puncheons
General description of segment: Mostly
aspen/pine/spruce/fir,
with jack pine in northwest part. Flat to gently rolling on
uplands,
hillier along Sturgeon River. Trail junction where trail
(eastbound)
first reaches Sturgeon River leads 400 feet to Oren Krumm Shelter, with
wilderness latrine, firepit on bluff above river, and 2 developed
"overflow"
tent campsites. Shelter is first come/first served, but please
share
if there's space in bad weather or buggy conditions. Check out
the
log book for info on the shelter and shelter area. Tibbets
(Tibbetts
on some maps) Falls is a series of short drops over slate ledges; climb
downhill from the trail to visit the falls. Good camping
potential
at a number of places along the Sturgeon River. Good area to
listen/howl
for wolves. They have been spotted here and on the rest of Baraga
Plains on several occasions by chapter members and others.
Trail formerly continued east of Plains Road to Autio Road.
However,
that segment has been abandoned.
None of the trail in this segment is certified North Country Trail
at this time.
Note: A white-blazed trail does extend upstream from the NCT to the
Sturgeon River bridge. This is a scenic trail, well worth the
hike if you have time. The junction of this trail and the NCT is
not signed at this time; make sure you watch blaze colors.
Trail conditions (as of 2005): Trail is
easily followed and is in good condition. Some areas are subject
to frequent blowdown, and some areas along the Sturgeon River are
subject
to flooding in high water.
