Segment 18, Junction South
Laird
Road and Forest Road 1360 to Sturgeon River Bridge on Forest Road 2270
Length: 4.04 miles (0.98 miles from junction of South
Laird
Road and FR 1360 to point where trail rejoins South Laird Road to the
east,
0.28 miles east from there to 90 degree bend in South Laird Road, 1.05
miles from 90 degree bend in South Laird Road to Silver River, 0.91
miles
from Silver River to FR 2270, 0.82 miles from FR 2270 to Sturgeon
River)
Ownership: U.S. Forest Service and private
landowners
Responsible for maintenance: Upper Peninsula
Environmental
Coalition
Developments along trail: Signs at FR1360/South
Laird Road Junction, 90 degree turn in South Laird Road, FR 1360
crossing
north of Silver Mountain Road, and just west of the Sturgeon River
Bridge.
Future lean-to site. Passes what little remains of former CCC
Camp Sturgeon just east of
90 degree turn in South Laird Road.
General description of segment: Flat to hilly,
mixed hardwood/hemlock and aspen, no bridges over Silver River or
Boulder
Creek (usually little crossing hazard, but expect wet feet at times),
follows South
Laird Road for 1/4 mile west from 90 degree turn in that road.
South
Laird Road is plowed in winter from Highway M-28 at Alston southward to
the 90 degree turn in the road, and to the west for a short distance
only). Other roads are not plowed. Excellent camping
potential
in vicinity of Boulder Creek and Silver River (permanent streams).
Trail conditions (as of 2005): Trail is
basically clear and well-marked. Where the trail ascends the bank a
hundred feet or so west of Boulder Creek, there are a few misplaced
blue diamonds. The trail goes up the hill there at a gradual
angle.
