Developments along trailSigns at trailheads at FH 16, FR 1500, and South Laird Road
General description of segment Mixed hardwood/hemlock, conifer, and aspen, some beaver ponds and wetlands.  Flat to hilly.  Headwaters of West Branch of Sturgeon River is a dependable water source, with camping potential nearby.  No designated parking at FR 1500; park at entrance to eastbound gated road a few hundred feet south of the trail crossing (don't block gate).  Trail follows FR 1500 briefly (northward if eastbound).  FH 16 is plowed in winter (low priority plowing, though).  FR 1500 and FR 1360 are not plowed.  South Laird Road is often plowed to a point about 1/4 mile east of the FR 1360 junction, from the east only!
Trail conditions (as of 2005): Some trail work is needed, but the trail should be easy to follow.
