Segment 16, Forest Road 1100
to Forest Highway 16
Length: 4.88 miles (0.48 miles from FR 1100 to E and LS
Railroad,
2.68 miles from E and LS Railroad to Forest Road 1470, 0.40 miles from
FR 1470 to Bob Lake Spur Trail, 1.32 miles from Bob Lake Spur Trail to
FH 16)
Ownership: U.S. Forest Service
Responsible for maintenance: U.S. Forest Service
Developments along trail: Signs at trailheads and
at junction of spur trail to Bob Lake National Forest Campground, small
bridge at Newholm Creek, railroad (low traffic) crossing near Newholm
Creek,
future lean-to.
General description of segment: Rolling country
with some beaver ponds, lots of pleasant hardwood/hemlock stands, some
aspen and a few clearcuts nearby. Camping is possible at many of
the small stream crossings, and creeks like Newholm Creek are permanent
water sources. Bob Lake Campground has nice lakeside sites (those
sites may be full on summer weekends, but non-lakeside sites are almost
always available and lakeside sites are often available on
weekdays).
There's also a nice swimming beach near the campground, and the Beaver
Lodge Interpretive Trail is worth a hike (it's a loop trail, so you may
wish to check out both sides of the loop if you take the side trip to
Bob
Lake). Forest Highway 16 is plowed in winter, but it's about the
last road anyone plows after a storm.
Trail conditions (as of 2005): Trail should be
well-marked and easy to follow.
