Trail Maps and Trail Conditions
-
Segment 1, South Boundary Road to Big Iron River Bridge (west half)

Length: 7.59 miles (1.00 from South Boundary Road to east park boundary, 6.59 miles from east park boundary to West Branch of Big Iron River.
Ownership: Michigan DNR, U.S. Forest Service
Responsible for maintenance: Michigan DNR, U.S. Forest Service
Developments along trail: Trail signs at South Boundary Road, possible future lean-to
General description of segment: Mostly fairly level, mixed older growth hardwoods/hemlocks and younger forest, follows bluff above West Branch of Big Iron River for a considerable distance, mountain bikes use part of trail and mountain bike trail crosses trail in places.  South Boundary Road is not plowed in winter. Potential campsites along West Branch of Big Iron River.
Trail conditions (as of 2000): Trail is well-cleared and easy to follow, except one spot almost in the very middle of section. There is a short cutacross trail at the line between sections 16 and 17 that is brushy and very poorly marked.  Mountain bike impacts on shared section seem minimal as tread is durable and mountain bike usage is very low.  There are some very muddy sections in the first couple miles east of South Boundary Road, but all are easily passable.
