This section includes most of the 2.6 miles where the NCT and the White Pine Trails (rail trail) are concurrent. The trail is currently paved south of Russell Road. This portion is on NCTA Map MI-03, North Segment. Russell road is not named on that map, but is the first E-W road north of M-57.
Department of Natural Resources' park and recreation officials announced July 19 that construction will begin next week on the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail State Park.
The $1 million contract is funded by donations from the Friends of the White Pine Trail, West Michigan businessman Fred Meijer, and grants from the Michigan Department of Transportation and from the DNR Forest, Mineral and Fire Management and Parks and Recreation Divisions.
A total of 8.2 miles of the trail will be paved from Russell Road on the south end near the intersection of M-57 and M-131 in Kent County to the north side of Sand Lake's village limits. The improvements will provide access to a greater segment of trail users.
"Recreational enthusiasts should plan for the trail to be closed all summer, but open on weekends if able," said Troy Rife, Cadillac District DNR planner.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in October of 2007.
