Trail adopter(s): Jim & Norma Matteson 906-228-4165, snowmatteson@charter.net; Tom Vallier, Bob Kahl906-228-3037, robert_kahl@sbcglobal.net
Segment length: Various loops from 0.8 mile to 2 miles
Last update: March 2010
On the trail:

There are multiple trails in this area. From the NCNST Segment 13 N of Compeau Creek to County Road 550 the intersection with the Wetmore Pond Trails is approximately 1 mile west of Country Road 550.

The Lily Pond Trail comes off this link in about 0.2 mile. Turn right, cross the old railroad bed then through woods and out to a rocky overlook of Lily Pond. Watch closely for the green blazes since a tread on these rock outcroppings is not easily detected. This segment, including the loop (see map) is about 1.3 miles.

Turning left from the link trail takes you to the Marsh Trails, the Wetmore Pond Trail and the Old Growth Trail. It is about a half a mile from the intersection to the Wetmore Pond Trails parking area. The Old Growth Trail is about 0.8 mile in length with a nice platform overlook of Wetmore Pond.

In the rocky portions of this trail you will find rock cairns (piles of stone) to guide your way. Please respect them so others can find their way.

Linking segment: 13 N of Compeau Creek to County Road 550

Vehicle access for this segment is via:

  • County Road 550 (the Big Bay Road) approximately 2.3 miles north of the Tourist Park Trail Head. Turn left (west) onto Compeau Creek Road (Note: This is a dirt road and is also known as County Road HK.), cross the railroad track and follow the road around through a junk yard, up a hill and continue for about 2.1 miles, mostly west but arcing to the right into Forestville Road. There is no real parking here, so just pull off the road. Note: There are many logging roads through here, no road signs and some roads have multiple names on various maps you may locate so it is easy to get confused.

  • County Road 550 approximately half a mile north of Sugarloaf Mountain parking area or approximately 5.5 miles north of the intersection of County Road 550 and Sugarloaf Avenue in Marquette. Turn left (west) into the Wetmore Pond Parking area.

  • County Road 550 approximately 0.7 mile north of Sugarloaf Mountain parking area or approximately 5.7 miles north of the intersection of County Road 550 and Sugarloaf Avenue in Marquette. The trail crosses County Road 550 here. There is no parking area and County Road 550 is very busy so be sure to pull as far off the road as possible.
