Unnamed Road to East McCormick

Segment 23 Unnamed Road to East McCormick
Trail adopter(s): no adopter
Segment length: 4.6 miles
Last update: March 2010
On the trail:

Westbound: From the Unnamed Road head west and immediately make your way up a rather steep hill through a nice switchback. Take the trail through nice hardwoods and along a small lake to the north. The trail will continue westerly and after about 0.7 mile from the lake it will turn northwest (right). After another 0.7 mile you will emerge from the woods to an old two track. Turn left and follow the two track for about 0.3 mile. Reenter the woods on the left and in about 1.0 mile you come up along the Dead River and a nice gorge with a waterfall and the Boy Scout Bridge. Come out onto the road and turn right. After about 500 feet turn left back to the trail as it continues heading west. You will go through some low land, a blackberry patch and then up a ridge ending after about 1.3 miles at the road with the red gate.

Eastbound: From the road with the red gate, head to the east through some low land with a lot of thistle, down a ridge, a blackberry patch and another low area. After about 1.3 miles you will emerge out on the road. Turn right and go about 500 feet (just before the bridge across the Dead River). Turn left into the trail, cross the Boy Scout Bridge, enjoy the Dead River Gorge and falls then into the woods for about 1 mile. You will come to an old two track. Go about 0.3 mile on the two track before turning right back into the woods. About 0.7 mile you will come to a small lake on the north of the trail. Another 0.7 mile down a switchback on a steep hill will get you out to Unnamed Road.

Previous segment: 22 - Cole's Creek to Unnamed Road
Next segment: 24 - McCormick East to Peshekee River

Vehicle access is at the western end the segment.

  • From Marquette, take US-41 west through Champion and past Van Riper State Park. Just after crossing the Peshekee River turn right (north) onto County Road 607 (also known as the Peshekee Grade). This road is blacktopped but do not be deceived. It is very rough so drive slow. From the US-41 / County Road 607 intersection, drive 4.2 miles to Dishno Road. There will be an "EMS Pickup" sign at the corner. Turn right (east) onto gravel Dishno Road. After approximately 1.6 miles, Dishno Road heads east. Turn slightly left, heading in a northeast direction and follow this unnamed, but good, gravel road for another 6.1 miles to Carlson's Corner (total mileage from County Road 607 = 7.7 miles).

    • At Carlson's Corner turn right (east) and continue to follow this unnamed road for about 3.2 miles where the trail crosses. You will cross the Dead River about 0.5 mile before reaching the trail. Parking is just south of the trail off the east side of Unnamed Road.

    • At Carlson’s Corner turn left. Go 0.7 mile to a fork. Stay right and follow for about 0.75 mile then make a sharp left for another 0.75 mile. You will cross the Dead River and can park up the hill on the side of the road. The Boy Scout Bridge is just to the east on the trail.

    • At Carlson’s Corner turn left. Go to the fork at 0.7 mile and stay left. You will come to a red gate that is closed but unlocked. You may go through but be sure to close the gate each time you go through it to respect the property owners who have so kindly given us permission to pass through. Go about a mile from the fork and park.
