Segment 26 Road Between Lakes Arfelin & Big Bear to Lake Elinor Outlet

On the trail: ALERT: Summer 2011 Logging is active through this segment so it is recommended that you avoid it until we delete this alert.

Westbound: From the Road (N46 37.885 W88 04.370) between Lakes Arfelin and Big Bear, follow the trail in an arc to the northwest. After about 0.2 mile the trail will swing southwest as it curves around the south side of Big Bear Lake and meeting the road access at N46 37.656 W88 05.058. One (1.0) mile farther and it takes a sharp right turn to the west where it ends (N46 37.677 W88 05.914) after another 1.1 mile.

Eastbound: From the west end (N46 37.677 W88 05.914) head east for about 1.1 mile where the trail takes a sharp left, turning north. As you make your way northeast, you come to the road access at N46 37.656 W88 05.058 and skirt the south side of Big Bear Lake. Go about 1 mile where the trail turns south east for the last 0.2 mile to the road between Lakes Arfelin and Big Bear (N46 37.885 W88 04.370).

Vehicle access for this segment:

  • from Marquette, take US-41 west through Champion and past Van Riper State Park. Just after crossing the Peshekee River turn right (north) onto County Road 607 (also known as the Peshekee Grade). This road is blacktopped but do not be deceived. It is very rough so drive slowly. From the US-41 / County Road 607 intersection, drive 4.2 miles to Dishno Road. There will be an "EMS Pickup" sign at the corner. Do not turn onto Dishno Road, instead stay on County Road 607 for 3.3 miles more and then turn left (N46 37.202 W88 01.997). (Note: The roads you follow for the rest of the way do not have names.) Follow this road for about 1.4 miles where it will make a turn to the right for about 0.2 mile when it will again make a sharp right. In about 0.6 mile this road turns sharply left N46 36.943 W88 03.629).

    • Do not take the left. Continue on the road straight ahead (north) towards Section 28 Lake. Follow for roughly 0.6 mile where there is a "Y" intersection (N46 37.294 W88 03.930). Keep left and go about 1 mile to the trail (N46 37.921 W88 04.342).

    • Do not take the left. Continue on the road straight ahead (north) towards Section 28 Lake. Follow for roughly 0.6 mile where there is a "Y" intersection (N46 37.294 W88 03.930). Keep right and go about 1.1 mile to meet the trail (N46 37.656 W88 05.058).

    • Take the left in a southwest direction and continue for 2.9 miles, eventually going mostly northwest. You will end at N46 37.543 W88 06.119. This segment of the trail heading east begins northeast at N46 37.677 W88 05.914.
