Peter White Road to Mangum Road

Segment 5 Peter White Road to Mangum Road
Trail adopter(s): Tom/Liz Solka, 906-228-2106 / tsolka@aol.com
Segment length: 6.8 miles
Last update: March 2010
On the trail:

Westbound: Enter at Peter White Road and hike through the woods along a ridge for 1.8 miles where you will take a sharp right and go down a slope for 0.5 miles before emerging out onto Sigan (also spelled Segan) Road (an unimproved road). It is a road walk for about 0.8 mile when you turn right, still following Sigan Road for another 0.7 mile where you will turn left onto an old two-track. Follow the two-track as it turns into the woods for another 0.7 miles. You will come out onto a road, turn left and then in a short distance turn right and head into the woods again for the final 2.3 miles over rocky terrain and eventually coming out onto Mangum Road.

Eastbound: From Mangum Road follow the trail through the woods for about 2.3 miles through somewhat rocky terrain. You will emerge out onto a road. Turn left and follow for a short distance before turning right back into the woods that will eventually turn into an old two-track for about 0.7 mile. Turn right at Sigan (also spelled Segan) Road (an unimproved road) and follow for another 0.7 mile where you will turn left, still following Sigan Road for about 0.8 miles. Turn into the woods heading up a slope for approximately 0.5 miles. At the top of the ridge follow the trail for another 1.8 miles to Peter White Road.

Previous segment: 4 - Rumely Road to Peter White Road
Next segment: 6 - Mangum Road to RR Grade 3 miles west of Sand River Road

Vehicle access is from both the east and the west ends of the trail.

  • From Sundell Road (east end): Approximately 6.3 miles east of the US-41 and M-94 intersection south of Marquette, turn left (north) and travel north approximately 2.3 miles. The road becomes very rough from this point on so drive slowly. Continue heading north for approximately 1.8 miles. You will arrive at a T-intersection. Turn right (east) and follow Peter White Road for approximately 0.9 mile to the trailhead on each side of the road.

    • There is no real parking area, but you can park along the road.

  • Accessing the trail from the west end involves going east from Harvey on M-28 for 12.1 miles and turning right (south) onto Sand River Road. Take Sand River Road to its intersection with Mangum Road, turning right. The trailhead is approximately 1000 feet west of the intersection on the left. The Road Commission has dug a deep ditch for road runoff, leaving a steep bank up (and down) to access the trail. A short alternate is available just to the east of the carsonite sign.

    • There is no real parking area, but you can park along the road.

This is a trail segment with varied terrain, large old trees, rocky sections, several old abandoned road walks and a seasonal creek. Some sections become flooded in the early season so be prepared with proper footgear.
