Fall 2015 Footnotes: You can download a pdf copy of our Fall 2015 newsletter, Footnotes, for additional news from our chapter.

Nettie Does the NCT: North Country Trail: Our very own Lorana Jinkerson realized there was no children’s book about the North Country National Scenic Trail so she decided to write one. Working throughout the winter months of 2009, the text took shape followed by a good month or more of working with an illustrator, Toby Mikle. In October 2009, Nettie Does the NCT became a Finalist winner in the Children's Picture Book: Softcover Non-Fiction category of the National Best Books 2009 Awards.

Nettie Does the NCT: North Country Trail is about four friends who are members of the North Country Trail Association and love to hike the North Country National Scenic Trail. As the story of their adventures unfolds, “blue blazes” provide the reader with interesting and useful facts about the North Country Trail and hiking it, thus making this book a teaching tool for parents and teachers as well as a fun book to read.

As Richard Louv’s Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder notes, we need to encourage parents to expose their children to the wonders of our natural environment. This can be accomplished through hiking on the NCT with Nettie and her friends since sixty-five million people, "21 percent of the U.S. population," are within a single day's drive of this amazing trail - the North Country National Scenic Trail, that is!

All profits from the sale of the book will be donated to the North Country Trail Association and our local chapter, the North Country Trail Hikers. Please plan to buy one or more copies for yourself, your children, your grandchildren, your friends and neighbors for birthdays, Christmas, or just because you love them. You might also consider purchasing some for your local library or school. You can get more information from the website: https://sites.google.com/site/nettiedoesthenct/ or e-mail Lorana at yooperturtle@gmail.com to order or request free advertising bookmarks. Cost is $15 plus $2 for shipping.
