Little Presque Isle Point to Echo Lake Road

Segment 16 Little Presque Isle Point to Echo Lake Road
Trail adopter(s): John/Marge Forslin, 906-869-4791 / mforslin2@charter.net
Segment length: 2.5 miles
Last update: March 2010
On the trail:

Westbound: From the Little Presque Isle Point parking area, take the handicap accessible trail towards the point. Near the end, the NCNST crosses this access trail. Turn left, hiking through beautiful tall pines back towards County Road 550. At the intersection of the Little Songbird Trail access, turn right, crossing Harlow Creek and climbing up and around a hill. Portions of this segment coincide with the Little Songbird Trail and it is easy to follow the tread and not watch for the blue blazes where the NCNST turns away. You will come to a sharp turn left which will take you back along the Lake Superior lakeshore. The wind along the lakeshore can be strong so be sure to dress appropriately. In slightly less than a mile you will make another sharp turn to the left, heading back towards County Road 550. When you reach County Road 550, cross and pick up the trail on the west side. This is portion is mostly mixed hardwoods and pine and will cross an old railroad bed then turn right onto an old two-track road where it continues, crosses a small stream and eventually comes out onto Echo Lake Road. Turn right and head back towards County Road 550.

Eastbound: From the corner of County Road 550 and Echo Lake Road, take the Echo Lake Road walk west for about 0.1 mile where the trail turns into an old two-track, crossing a stream just as you start off. Follow this old two-track for less than a mile then turn left into the woods, crossing an old railroad bed and on towards County Road 550. At County Road 550, cross and head down and north east as the trail goes to the shore of Lake Superior. Along Lake Superior the winds can be strong so dress appropriately. This portion is just shy of a mile when it turns away from the lake and back towards County Road 550. You will go around a hill, follow the swamp, cross Harlow Creek and eventually reach the intersection of the NCNST with the Little Songbird Trail. Note that portions of the Little Songbird Trail coincide with the NCNST so watch carefully for the blue blazes, not the tread. At the Songbird Trail access trail, turn left and head east towards the Little Presque Isle Point where there is a handicap accessible viewing platform and trail back to the parking area.
