Section length: 4.9 miles

According to the "Hikeable Segments of the North Country Trail" book, The Little Presque Isle Recreation Area is segment 34 of the Michigan part of the NCT.

This segment has one end on County Road 550, just 3/4 of a mile northwest of the Sugarloaf Mountain parking lot. The other end intersects with County Road 550 just 6 miles down the trail or 2.7 miles by road.

This segment of the trail is easily broken into shorter walks since there are two parking areas. One of the parking areas is at Wetmore Landing and the other is at Little Presque Isle.

  • Section 1: If you park at Wetmore, walk down to Lake Superior. While facing the lake, turn right (south). This section is just over a mile and has a spur which goes up the back slope of Sugarloaf Mountain. It features beautiful rock formations, wetlands and Lake Superior views.

  • Section 2:  If you turn left (north) at Wetmore, there is a 1.6 mile hike to Little Presque Isle Point. This is a very popular section of the trail, especially in the summer on the beaches. There are two flights of stairs and a short bridge in this segment. It takes you down to the shoreline; high above with views of shoreline cliffs; and back down again to the beach.

  • Section 3: The third section of the Little Presque Isle segment is roughly 3 miles. It starts at Little Presque Isle Point and heads north. It intersects and sometimes follows the Song Bird Trail in the area. This section features a bridge over Harlow Creek and plenty of Lake Superior shoreline.

The trail in the spring is alive with shades of green.

Our blue blazes show up well against the greens and browns of the trail.

Conditions on July 4 & 5, 2006.

The trail is in good condition. The wet spots have dried out. The blueberries are just beginning to ripen. Weather has been beautiful..

I spoke with a couple who were hiking the trail and they told me that they had seen fresh bear tracks coming up from the beach and across the trail, so keep your eyes open for four legged visitors.

Happy hiking.
