Segment 17 Echo Lake Road to Elliott Donnelley Wilderness

On the trail:

Westbound: From Echo Lake Road, head into the woods, climbing up a ridge. Follow the ridge where you can see nice views of Lake Superior when the trees are barren. Turn left, travel northwest towards Gokey Rock, then more northerly. Some of this is on old logging roads. As you approach the south side of the Little Garlic River, turn right and follow the river east to County Road 550. Turn left, crossing the Little Garlic River on the CR 550 bridge. End in the parking area of the Elliott Donnelley Wilderness.

Eastbound: Leaving the Elliott Donnelley Wilderness parking area, turn right and cross the Little Garlic River on the County Road 550 bridge. At the end of the guardrail, turn sharply right and follow the trail up and along the south side of the Little Garlic River. After about a mile, the trail turns southerly, heading towards Gokey Rock. Some of this trail is on old logging roads. At Gokey Rock, turn slightly southeast and follow the trail to a ridge with views of Lake Superior when the trees are barren. Turn right and follow the ridge towards Echo Lake Road.

Vehicle access for this segment:

  • Echo Lake Road. Take County Road 550 approximately 8.7 miles north of the intersection of County Road 550 and Sugarloaf Avenue in Marquette, turn left onto Echo Lake Road. Drive 0.1 mile where the trail crosses Echo Lake Road. Be sure not to block Echo Lake Road as you park here.

  • County Road 550 approximately 8.7 miles north of the intersection of County Road 550 and Sugarloaf Avenue in Marquette, turn right into an old road area just prior to Eagles Nest Road. Park, walk across County Road 550 and down Echo Lake Road about 0.1 mile where the trail crosses Echo Lake Road.

  • the Elliott Donnelley Wilderness parking area 12 miles north of Marquette on County Road 550.
