The trail is not marked with blue blazes within the boundaries of the McCormick Wilderness so the use of a GPS with waypoints (provided in the text) is recommended. You can also contact us and we can provide you with a GPS file of the complete trail in the McCormick Wilderness Tract.
Westbound: From the east entrance, take a 0.2 mile hike into the woods before coming to a kiosk (N46 39.231 W87 57.626) where you can register your hike before heading into the McCormick Wilderness. Since this is a wilderness area, there are no NCNST blue blazes to follow so traversing this section takes a watchful eye for the trail. Watch for tread, trimmed limbs, rock cairns, and hatchet marks on trees. After about 2.2 miles you will come to the mid-point access (N46 39.019 W87 59.410) where you can exit if you staged a vehicle in the middle parking location. If you continue westward, it is about 4.4 miles to a two track where you will turn left, cross the bridge over the Peshekee River and be in the western parking area (N46 38.528 W88 02.797).
Eastbound: The trail heads out from the parking area (N46 38.528 W88 02.797), crossing the Peshekee River on a newly renovated bridge. After crossing the bridge turn right into the trail as it heads east. Since this is a wilderness area, there are no NCNST blue blazes to follow so traversing this section takes a watchful eye for the trail. Watch for tread, trimmed limbs, rock cairns, and hatchet marks on trees. About 4.4 miles in, you will come to the mid-point access (N46 39.019 W87 59.410) where you can exit if you have staged a vehicle in the middle parking location. If you continue on, there will be a kiosk at the east end (N46 39.231 W87 57.626) where you can register your hike before taking the final leg out (about 0.2 mile) to the parking on the road to the east. |

| Next segment: 25 - Peshekee River to Road Between Lakes Arfelin & Big Bear |
Vehicle access for this segment:
-
to the east end is from Marquette, take US-41 west through Champion and past Van Riper State Park. Just after crossing the Peshekee River turn right (north) onto County Road 607 (also known as the Peshekee Grade). This road is blacktopped but do not be deceived. It is very rough so drive slow. From the US-41 / County Road 607 intersection, drive 4.2 miles to Dishno Road. There will be an "EMS Pickup" sign at the corner. Turn right (east) onto gravel Dishno Road. After approximately 1.6 miles, Dishno Road heads east. Turn slightly left, heading in a northeast direction and follow this unnamed, but good, gravel road for another 6.1 miles to Carlson's Corner (total mileage from County Road 607 = 7.7 miles). At Carlson’s Corner turn left. Go to the fork at 0.7 mile and stay left. You will come to a red gate that is closed but unlocked. You may go through but be sure to close the gate each time you go through it to respect the property owners who have so kindly given us permission to pass through. Go about a mile from the fork and park.
