East of McCormick (McCormick Wilderness)
to Peshekee River
Segment 24 East of McCormick to Peshekee River
Trail adopter(s): Michael Rankinen, 906-339-2953 / jrankinen3@aol.com
Segment length: 6.8 miles
Last update: September 2008
On the trail:
Eastbound: The trail heads out from the parking area, crossing the Peshekee River on a newly renovated bridge. Since this is a wilderness area, there are no NCT trail blazes to follow so traversing this section takes a watchful eye for the trail. The trail is approximately 7 miles long from here heading east.

Other trail: White Deer Lake Spur
Other trail: Lower Baraga Lake Spur
Previous segment: 23 - Dishno Road to East of McCormick Wilderness
Next segment: 25 - Peshekee River to Road Between Lakes Arfelin & Big Bear

Access to the NCT across the McCormick Tract is via US-41/M-28 west of Champion on the west side of the Peshekee River. Turn north unto the Peshekee Grade (County Rd 607). Travel north 4.2 mi to the intersection with Dishno Rd. Follow CR 607 (now also known as Huron Bay Grade) to the left 5.1 miles to the parking area for The McCormick Wilderness, part of the Ottawa National Forest.

As you get out and hike this or any of our sections, please contact the trail adopter with reports of trail conditions, including blow-downs, washouts, and inadequate blazing.

The North Country Trail Hikers Chapter hiked the McCormick Tract on Saturday, September 30, 2006. See the Fall 2006 Newsletter for a nice story of our hike: www.northcountrytrail.org/nct/Newsletters.htm

The pictures here are of the group at the parking area, crossing the Peshekee River (the bridge was out the day of our hike) and registering comments at the end of our trek.

Portions of this section of the NCT are described in Eric Hansen's Hiking Michigan's Upper Peninsula, pp. 85 - 88.
