Completed Trail - Updated January 2008

The Itasca Moraine Chapter and the Star of the North Chapter set a goal of having the North Country Trail constructed and certified from the Chippewa National Forest to the Old Headquarters Site in the Bad Medicine Area by 2007. Goals are set each year to help keep the project on schedule.  Due to a decision by the Minnesota Recreational Trail Users Association not to re-open a grant and recently passed state legislation regarding trail review, the goal was not met.

Since being formed in the spring of 2002, the Chapter has been engaged in extending the NCT from the west boundary of the Chippewa National Forest toward Itasca State Park.  As of June 2007, 28 miles of trail have been certified west of the Chippewa National Forest boundary.

In ’04 a spur trail was developed to a campground on Waboose Lake.  The campground has two tent pads, a fire ring and a wilderness latrine.  During 2005, a new section of trail was constructed in Itasca State Park from the current NCT/Ozawindib Trail east passing just south of the South Entrance and continuing east to the eastern border of the park.  A short connector trail was also constructed from the South Entrance to the new NCT Segment.  New trail construction east of the park wa commenced in 2006.
