"The folks who have a heart for trails find ways to help"

Joan H. Young in "Heart and Sole"

The North Country National Scenic Trail is a premier footpath that one day will stretch more than 4,000 miles to link communities and wilderness areas across seven northern states. Already, more than 1,600 miles have been completed!

The Itasca Moraine Chapter

This new chapter, chartered April 2002, is responsible for the section of North Country National Scenic Trail in the state of Minnesota-between the Chippewa National Forest and a point within Itasca State Park defined as the intersection of the Eagle Scout Trail (host trail) and Nicollet Trail.  We are dedicated to developing and maintaining our part of this great project to the highest standards, and we encourage you to join us in this effort. The Itasca Moraine Chapter meets quarterly and hosts several organized hikes and work days each year. Most of the work is done with hand tools. Instruction and safety issues are well addressed

You Can Share In This Project

We are a small group mostly from the Bemidji, Hackensack, Walker, Akeley, Benedict, Laporte, and Park Rapids, but we also get assistance from members of the twin cities Star of the North Chapter and other greater Minnesota areas. Our object is to provide support for our section of the North Country National Scenic Trail. Much of our effort will be devoted to marking, clearing, certifying, blazing and maintaining the trail. This is hard work but very satisfying and a chance to participate in great fellowship with kindred souls. Other very important activities include layout and planning of new projects, promotion and increased awareness of our project, and activity planning

Enjoy A Stroll In The Woods

Whether or not you are an active hiker, the North Country National Scenic Trail offers you a great opportunity to visit and enjoy this great country of ours. And the trail is right in our own back yard! By participating in the Itasca Moraine Chapter, you can help get the word out about the rich resources we have right here in central Minnesota. There is a place for everyone - active hiker or stroller -who just wants to enjoy the woods, farmlands, and lakes that the trail passes by. The trail we build is semi-primitive. There is something about how such a trail just disappears into the deep woods with an irresistible beckoning.

Your First Step

To be a part of this effort, you will need to join the North Country Trail Association. The yearly contribution is normally $30 but there is an introductory special offer of $18. To qualify you need to identify yourself as a sponsored first-time member. When you register be sure to select the option to become a member of the Itasca Moraine Chapter and list your sponsor as Jerry Trout (our president).
