Bill Courtis on the May hike. He is not always this serious about hiking!
TRAIL WORK--Roger Blanchard’s May Work Crew was able to build a large switchback and another smaller one, make two trail improvements where water had obliterated the trail tread, clear the trail near Culhane Lake and move down to the Tahqua Trail area to scope and clear the trail, and blaze some of the trail south of the Lower Falls campground. Roger’s crew members were from the Sierra Club and HSS chapter.
TRAIL MAINTENANCE--Glen Cornwell has been sprucing up the trail around Brevort Lake Campground. HSS hopes to have the trail from Castle Rock parking to Brevort Lake Campground Road ready for summer campers and other hikers. Other volunteers have been out on their sections readying it for the summer hiking season. If you some spare time and would like to help contact Roger Blanchard at
FIRST ANNUAL TAHQUA TRAIL HIKE ON THE NCNST--HSS is joining Craig Krepps the Park Manager at Tahquamenon Falls State Park in offering a 2008 souvenir token and a certificate to all hikers that hike the First Annual Tahqua Trail Hike. This is a twenty mile stretch of the North Country National Scenic Trail between the River Mouth Campground and the Upper Falls. You can do it all in one day or take as long as you wish or need. The token is designed as a collector’s item with one side for the NCNST and the other for Tahquamenon State Park. You can contact the park or HSS for more information. Tahqua Trekkers will be providing shuttle services between the River Mouth and the Upper Falls this summer.
