Working on the NCT during Michigan Trails Week
September 24-30, 2017
Help us finish up some of our 2017 projects, start some others, and lay out even more -- all while spending time on the trail!
There will be varied tasks -- we have a tool that can fit your hand!
Come when you can, leave when you must. Spend a morning or afternoon, a day or two OR all week! There will be camping available. Some meals will be planned and shared.
Contact Kay at 989-350-2826 and let us know when you can help out and what your camping needs will be.
The week ends with the Hike 'Tween Da Falls at Tahquamenon Falls State Park. We will have a display set up and will need people to man the display as well as ride the bus and hike the hike!
"Hike 'Tween Da Falls!"
September 30, 2017
Celebrate Michigan Trails Week by hiking the most popular trail in the park! The River Trail parallels the Tahquamenon River between the Upper and Lower Falls. Total hiking distance, 5 miles. This trail is considered challenging due to exposed roots, hills and potential mud.
Park your vehicle at the Lower Falls and take a free shuttle to the Upper Falls to begin your hike. Shuttle runs every 30-minutes beginning at 9 am. Last shuttle leaves the Lower Falls at 1 pm.
Please plan your hike in this order: Park at either the Upper or Lower Falls parking lots, catch the next shuttle bus, hike back to your car via the NCT/River Trail taking in the views of both the Upper and Lower Falls and the Tahquamenon River between. If you hike first, the shuttle may not be running when you finish. This hike could take 3 to 4 hours to complete because of the challenges and the picturesque views along the way.
Bring: Camera, water, appropriate footwear for hiking, insect repellent.
Stop and say hello to the North Country Trail Association folks at the display table along the trail near the Lower Falls. The Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore chapter will have trail information and activities available. Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore maintains, promotes, develops and builds the NCT in the Eastern UP. The River Trail between the Falls is part of the North Country National Scenic Trail which runs 4600 miles between New York and North Dakota.
This hike also celebrates National North Country Scenic Trail Day!
Enjoy your hike!
Hike the North Tahquamenon Wilderness!
October 14, 2017
Meet at the Upper Falls Parking Lot and join us for a hike between the C-500 and the Upper Falls!
On the map we will be hiking between mile #727 and #721. http://arcg.is/2vWuhXB
This will be about 7 miles long. We are meeting at the Upper Falls parking lot and will car pool out to the start point and then hike back to our cars. Those that drive the car pool vehicles will be given rides (after the hike) back to the start point to collect their cars. This is a very beautiful hike!
The Michigan State Park Recreation Passport is required for entry into the Parking lot. Most will have paid for this with their Michigan License Plate fees. There is a place to purchase them at the parking lot as well. For more info on the passport: http://www.michigan.gov/ dnr/ 0,4570,7-153-10365_55798--- ,00.html
There is a new section of trail that we will be using on this hike.
Essentials: Camera, Water, footwear for hiking, first aid . . .
Bring a friend!
We should be able to find a watering hole afterward that will provide hydrating refreshments and sustenance.
