Half of the 180 miles of the North Country Trail that cross northwestern Pennsylvania are already completed, including a long stretch in the rolling hills of the Allegheny National Forest.
An autumn trek trough the National Forest will richly reward the hiker with the outstanding fall colors. Along the way, hikers will pass remnants of early oil exploration that once flourished in these hills.
Several excellent State parks lie along the route, including McConnell's Mill. The operating grist mill in the park is a national historic landmark and is open to visitors.
It is typical of the blending of nature and cultural heritage that will enrich the experience for the North Country Trail users.
