Ben Hawkins (l) wields a mattock and Ron Sootsman (r) works with a MacLeod tool in the process of re-benching and widening the Trail. Benching, or cutting into the slope along which a trail runs, allows for a trail that is more level and easier to walk on. At the same time, a slight degree of tilt needs to be maintained on the trail in order to promote drainage and prevent erosion. |
