Newsletter July 2002 Next Chapter meetings: Aug 14 and Sep 11 at 7:00 PM at the Barry Township Hall in Delton. Email option to receive newsletter We can save some postage costs by sending our newsletter to you via email, and canceling your paper copy. Please let me know if that will work for you. (See our web page for back issues). For those who do receive email delivery only, I will confirm with you in 6 months that this is still working for you. I will send the newsletter to all email addresses I have, unless you request otherwise, so if you want both, you do not need to do anything. An exception to this will be our 2002 member directory, which we will not email or put on our web site. The member directory will be sent out in August with the newsletter. If you have had recent changes in address, email address, phone number, etc., please let me know at nalcoman1@aol.com and put Chief Noonday in the title of the email, and we will include your changes in the directory. Also let me know if you want all or part of your information to be excluded, before August 14. If you have let your membership lapse, there is still time to be included.Follow-up report on Charles Krammin’s hike June 21 to June 29 Charles Krammin sponsored a hike from Lowell to Battle Creek in late June and it was deemed a success. At least 10 participated in portions of the hike, with 7 starting and 9 finishing. Despite the hot temperatures, the hike was well attended, and enjoyed by those who participated. There were rumors that one day’s hike was a little longer than advertised, and perhaps Charles had walked some folks "into the ground". Only rumors. Some highlight pictures are available on our web site, including mute swans with their young. Work Session Schedule We having breakfast between 8 and 9am at Judy’s Restaurant; 915 Territorial (just off 20 th Street); Battle Creek on July 13 and July 27, then leaving for our work session at 9 am. See map to Judy’s by clicking here.On August 10, we are following the same schedule, but starting at the Hickory Cafe; 14576 S Kellogg School Road; Hickory Corners. This is on the SW corner of downtown Hickory Corners, so is easy to find. The purpose of these sessions is to maintain trail, further develop existing trail with signs, etc., and to build new trail. For a map to get to the Hickory Cafe, click here. For those of you who have never attended a work session, they are led by Charles Krammin, and are set up to match the abilities of those who attend, with our highest priority work. We do not work anyone too hard, and typically are done by noon. It’s a good chance to get out on the trail on a Saturday morning, and work with some of your fellow members. If you contact Charles before attending, it will help him plan the day, but come even if you haven’t. You can contact him by email at krammin@core.com, or by phone at 616 / 945-2569.Upcoming Trail Work Plans ¨ Mowing and maintenance of the MSU experimental dairy farm, and south to M-89¨ Extension of the current trail in Fort Custer National Cemetery¨ A sign permit has been approved at the Yankee Springs historic site on Norris Road¨ Complete the removal of downed trees north of Augusta Upcoming Promotional Activities Jerry Pattok is chairing a project for an informational booth at the Hastings Summerfest on August 23, 24, and 25. The purpose of this booth is to get information out to the public about the trail and our chapter, and the publicity opportunity at the Summerfest should be great. Trail Interpretation Project One of our major projects to help accomplish the mission of our chapter is the trail interpretation project, headed by LaVerne BeBeau. The purpose of this project is to provide information to enhance the enjoyment of your hike, and includes history of the area our trail passes through, as well as fauna and flora you may see along the trail. For example, LaVerne has researched and written the history of Chief Noonday, and is working on the history of the Yankee Springs Hotel. We have gotten some good ideas and support from the Pierce Cedar Creek Institute on this project. Sheryl Drenth, Bob Benham, and Tom Garnett are each canvassing a trail segment to look for items of potential interest. Trail Adopter Agreement Form Approved Dave Cornell submitted a final draft of our Trail Adopter Agreement, and we will begin using this form immediately. Give it a try. NTCA Conference Dave Cornell will be attending the NTCA conference in North Dakota, Aug 15-18. Let him know if you also plan to attend. Volunteers needed We appreciate the financial support of all our members, and if you have time occasionally, we need volunteer help in the following areas: ¨ Trail adopters –we have a need for those willing to take responsibility for a segment of trail for maintenance. This includes checking trail marking, checking for downed trees, and lots more. Typically a segment would be about 2 to 3 miles of trail. An adopter would be an individual, or an individual taking responsibility for a group.¨ Trail construction and maintenance – see discussion on work session schedule.¨ Trail promotion – we have a big need to get the word out on our trail to assure we have support to accomplish all of our goals. This helps us to get trail right of way, financial support, political support, and get additional volunteers. Your ideas and assistance in promoting the trail are needed. Leading hikes and telling your friends about the trail are examples of how you can help. See new member Jerry Pattok’s idea on the previous page for another example. Trail promotion can often be done near your home – contact Tom Garnett with your ideas.¨ Trail interpretation project – this is a pretty massive task in its own right, and will require a lot of volunteer hours, many which could be done from your home. Contact LaVerne BeBeau or Tom Garnett with your ideas and offers to help.New Board of Directory Members Steve Hicks was elected Treasurer, and Larry Pio was elected VP Administration to fill vacancies on our board. Bob Benham has decided to resign as Director and Treasurer, although will continue to provide input as an active member. We would like to thank Bob for his leadership and accomplishments.
