Newsletter Chapter Meeting October 2001 Reports Treasurers Report Bob Benham is incognito but we have about $1600 on account. Trail Report Charles Krammin was nominated and accepted the Vice President of Trails office with our Chapter. Congratulations Charles and we know he will do a good job. Charles mentioned he hopes to do as well as departing VP Trails Lynn Waldron. Some new endeavors include a two week trail work camp in May of 2002, finishing off trail in the Fort Custer Area. A helicopter placed a bridge in the Ott Preserve that connects the trails on the north side of the property to the south. Bids are currently being accepted to complete the boardwalk from the south to the bridge. Trail work continues in the Battle Creek area. If you are new to trail building, it is a lot of fun and rewarding. Plus, if you are able to arrive at Lavernes at 7:00 a.m., you can enjoy a hearty breakfast. Upcoming workdays are October 20, November 3, November 17, and December 1. All of which start at Lavern's (corner of Territorial and Woodward) at 7:00 for breakfast, 8:00 for departure to the trail. Charles is also looking for volunteers to adopt trail, maintain signs in Yankee Springs, Barry Game Area, processing and delivering lumber to Kimball Pines, and blue-blazing the Middleville Game Area. There is a newly certified segment north of McDonald Lake to M-37 comprising 6.6 miles of trail. Steve Drenth is constructing register boxes and Jeff Fleming is working on road signs marking trail crossings. Thanks guys! ACTIVITIES Barb Van Dyken is hosting a "hilunch" (hike and lunch) on October 27, 2001 from 8:30 to 1:00 p.m. Meet at the McKibbon Car Lot at the corner of Yankee Springs Road and Gun Lake Road. Last names ending in A-P bring fruit or chips. Q-Z brings desert. Chief Noonday will supply the sandwiches. Our next meeting takes place November 14, 2001, at the Barry Township Hall. This will be no regular meeting, in fact, all hot air from our leaders will be put on hold. Why? Our Executive Director, Bob Papp and trail legend Joan Young will be presenting about their experiences and we will be presenting a check for a sign we have partly purchased for the national office in Lowell. Please make an effort to come, and bring a potential new member PROMOTION AND WEBSITE Visit the website ( www.northcountrytrail.org) and forward comments (we like positive ones) to Gail Speer who works very hard on keeping us up to date in cyberspace.Look for Tom Funke in the Battle Creek Enquirer with more of his trail tales in the coming weeks. Meet at Lavernes (Territorial and Woodward, Battle Creek) 7:00 for breakfast, 8:00 for departure to trail. PLANNING Dave Cornell brought up for discussion the eventuality that there will be a distinct, and separate trail building crew from a trail maintenance, made of trail adopters. The role of a trail adopter will change from monitoring to actual trail maintenance. Trail adopters should be able to handle routine maintenance. Discussions continue on how to accomplish these tasks.
