Several members indicated an interest in joining with the West Michigan Chapter in leasing a bus for this trip. Dave Cornell is to report back to the Chapter at the July meeting regarding this matter. Goals for 2001 Final action regarding goals for 2001 will be taken at the Chapter's July meeting. The following suggestions will be refined that meeting. Political: A Chief Noonday member should be on the Parks Board for each County where the trail is located (Calhoun, Kalamazoo, and Barry). Trail: End to end marking should be completed. Weed whips should be acquired through a modification of our existing National Park Service Grants and training should be provided to volunteers in the operation of the whips. Register boxes should be installed a t several locations along the trail. A bench should be provided at the swan pond overlook on the Kellogg Biological Sanctuary property. We should complete the trail building work underway in Calhoun Count at the Kimball Pines and Preserve sites, and commence construction of the trail between Augusta and Battle Creek. The National Park Service road signs should be installed and routed wooden signs should be acquired and installed at all secondary road crossings. Volunteer Hours: All members should keep track and report their volunteer hours, as we get credits for funding and persuasion efforts. Membership: A comprehensive program for membership recruitment and retention should be adopted by the Chapter. We should have 190 non-business members and 10 business members by year's end. Activities: More members need to volunteer to lead hikes so that at least one hike a month takes place. Community Education: The Chapter needs a plan for educating the community regarding the North Country Trail. Trails Day 2001 The Trails Day Committee was congratulated on a job well done, and especially to Janet Wolfe for her dedicated leadership. Bill Powaser suggested that Trails Day 2002 should be held once again at the Kimball Pines site in order to build on the success of the 2001 event. Volunteer Coordinator Elected Charles Krammin was elected to the newly created post of Volunteer Coordinator. the national office is providing brochures to each chapter and requested as part of this process that each chapter designate a volunteer coordinator who will follow up on any referrals from the national office. All present were deeply moved by Charles' acceptance speech. Membership List This newsletter contains, as a supplement, an updated list of members and their addresses and phone numbers.
