Chapter Meeting May 2001

Treasurer’s Report

Bob Benham reports that our bank balance as of 4/1/01 is $1,955.85.

Activities Report

Barb VanDyken reported on several well attended hikes, hosted by various members of the chapter.  Charles Krammin, on of the Chief Noonday's legendary guides, inserted realism into one of the hikes by showing the participants how it feels to get lost in the woods.

Trail Coordinators Report

Lynn Waldron and Charles Krammin reported on trail work and maintenance.  The next work session is scheduled for May 19.  Please plan on meeting at the Hickory Corners Inn at 7am.

Trails Day Committee

Janet Wolfe and her committee are planning a very special day on June 2.  Enclosed with this newsletter is a brochure describing the planned activities.  The committee's next meeting will be at  the Trails Day site, Kimball Pines, at 1pm on May 19.  there will be a need for volunteers to help with the Trails Day, so try and make this meeting.

Trail Conference

Lynn Waldron has found it necessary to resign as the Chief Noonday representative to Michigan - Ohio trail Conference.  Annette Chapman was nominated and unanimously elected to fill this very important position.

Goals

Each year at our June meeting we set goals for the year.   Membership, both personal and business, as well as administrative, trail maintenance, and trail acquisition goals are discussed and set.  Please come prepared to give your thoughts.

Elections

The following people were elected to the following positions for a two year term:

  • President:  Dave Cornell
  • V.P. Trails:  Lynn Waldron
  • V.P. Admin:  Tom Garnett
  • Treasurer:  Bob Benham
  • Activities:  Barb VanDyken
  • Director:  Neil Juhl
  • Director:  Charles Krammin

The following people continue in the roles designated:

  • Web Site Manager:  Gail Speer
  • Trails Day Coordinator:  Janet Wolfe
  • Newsletter Editor:  Tom Funke
  • Conference Representative:  Annette Chapman

It was pointed out the Chapter's bylaws prohibit Dave Cornell from serving another term as president after this without taking a term off.

National Conference

The annual conference of the NCTA will take place in Cazenovia New York from August 9th through August 12.  Our chapter has had excellent representation in the past and those who have attended will tell you that a good time was had by all.   There is a possibility of a charter bus taking a group from west Michigan to New York.  More on this at our next meeting.

Mature Maintainers Meet

Known by various uncomplimentary names, this group of fine upstanding but mature members of Chief Noonday Chapter will commence meeting for breakfast at the Hickory Inn on May 17 at 8am.  Wear old clothes, as there is the possibility the actual physical labor will be attempted.

Donation to NCTA

The national headquarters has moved into its new building in Lowell Michigan.  There was considerable discussion surrounding what the Chief Noonday Chapter could do to aid and assist the National in this process.  It was decided that the Chapter would donate $5o00 to the National for the purpose of purchasing a sign for the new building.  It is hoped that a presentation can be made to a representative of the National at our Trail Days celebration.

Field Grants

Chief Noonday has received grants from both the National Park Service and the NCTA.  Grants are available from the Park Service, only at year end, and are usually restricted to monies needed by the Chapter for trail building supplies or maintenance equipment.  There are few restrictions on the NCTA grants.  The NCTA issues grants four times a year.  The next grant cutoff dates for the NCTA are July 15 and October 15.  If you have a project in mind that is eligible for grant monies, please see Charles Krammin or Dave Cornell.

ISTEA Grant

As everyone by now knows, Chief Noonday and the Calhoun County Community Development Authority have joined in applying to the State of Michigan for a planning grant so as to plan a trail in Calhoun County along the Kalamazoo River.  We should know if our request has been successful sometime this month.  Pat Allen was instrumental in starting this process and hopefully will be at Trails Day to give us an update.

High Honors

Probably the best trail/hiking calendar is published by the Appalachian Trail Conference.  The competition to have a picture published in the calendar is fierce.  Charles Krammin has one of his pictures in this year's AT calendar and has a $200 prize to boo.  Congratulations Charles!

Support our business members!

Lee's Sporting Goods, Sharp Park Campground, and Sandhill Marketing (Tom and Judy Garnett) support the NCTA and Chief Noonday through their generous contributions.  Please support them.  Lee's is sponsoring a seminar on backpacking on May 24, at 7pm at their store.  Our own Neil Juhl (and hopefully others from our chapter) will participate.

Newsletter

Tom Funke should not be blamed for the cheesy appearance of this newsletter.  Dave Cornell took over the publication of this (and maybe the next) newsletter so as to cut down on publishing time and get you the Trails Day info as soon as possible after the meeting.  Don't start complaining,a s Tom's beautiful newsletter will reappear shortly.  Incidentally, the publication of our newsletter is a time consuming process and several members, other than tom, play a role in it's publication.   Cheryl Drenth and Bob Seward play big roles in this monthly endeavor.  Next month's newsletter will contain a membership list so if there are any changes you want in your listing information, please call Dave Cornell before the next meeting.

Chief Noonday Meetings

Our June meeting will be held in the Barry Township hall at 7pm on June 13, 2001.  We are exploring the possibility of having our July meeting in Battle Creek where there is the possibility of having a premier speaker making a presentation at the close of our business meeting.
