Chapter Meeting April 2001

Treasurer’s Report & Financial Action:

Bob Benham reports that we still have $1,622.28 in our account.

From our National Office

Our national office's new address is:

North Country Trail Association, 229 East Main, Lowell, MI 49331   phone 888.454.6282

Promotion

Charles Krammin reported that some of his flower pictures have been selected for the Appalachian Trail calendar for 2002.

There was no newsletter for March, due to a computer crash and the consequent lack of labels.

Look for a Trails Day flyer soon!

A notice was circulated concerning the 2001 Northern Michigan Trail Summit to be held at Gaylord on May 31 and June 1.  Anyone interest in going, please contact the headquarters at Lowell.

Membership Matters!

Michigan has the most members, approximately 1,200.   Our chapter accounts for 15% of Michigan's total membership!

Trail Adopters

Neil Juhl asked for members to adopt a piece of the Trail and to walk it occasionally.  You do not need to do maintenance on your adopted section, but merely to report any work that needs to be done to the Association or maintenance teams.  They will undertake the work itself.

Activities

Neil Juhl will be presenting at Lee's Sporting Goods on May 24 at 7pm.  He will discuss trail maintenance and building techniques, and rumor has it he will have someone along to share "trail tales" of their adventures!

Lee's is one of our sponsors and will be presenting the "homes on our Backs" running on Thursdays, April 12 running through May 31.   All sessions start at 7pm.

Trails Day 2001

Meetings on May 5 and May 19.  1pm at Kellogg Forest.

Dennis Randolph from Calhoun County Community Development has agreed to be the keynote speaker.

Look for other activities:

  • Less, one of our sponsors, will have a display and show us how to use a GPS
  • a bird hike, led by the Audubon Society
  • a flower hike
  • a scavenger hike through Kimball Pines
  • a talk on survival skills by Larry Hawkins
  • a children's hike by Mary Ossenheim and Jan Lawson
  • a display on low-impact camping
  • Rides will be available to the far ends of the trails so hikers can hike back to base at Kimball Pines

Thanks Julie Jackson for doing the brochure and organizing the food.

Thanks to Janet Wolfe for keeping us organized and on track!

Remember that Trails Day is June 2!

Trail Work Days:

May 5 and May 19.  Meet at LaVernes on W. Territorial and Woodrow in Battle Creek at 7am to eat, 8am for those who want to sleep in!

Trail Report

Charles Krammin has heard from several members that the section of trail between Bassett Lake Road and McDonald Lake has been badly cut up by horses and is in need of rebenching.

The kiosk on Bassett Lake Road still needs refurbishing after suffering vandalism.

Kelly Road:  The county went through there recently and took out many of the trees with NCT blazes.  These need to be replaced.
