Chapter Meeting August 9, 2000

Many new members showed their faces (and hiking boots) at our last meeting. We actually had to pull out more chairs to accommodate everyone. Thanks for attending and you, too, are welcome at any of our meetings.

Calhoun County, here we come!

Next Meeting:

Wednesday, September 6th, 2000 at 7:00 pm.

Calhoun County Community Development

13300 15 Mile Road, Marshall                 click here to see a map for driving directions

We are pushing to attract more members from Calhoun County. Please come one, come all! Enclosed is a flyer promoting our meeting. Let's fill the room with prospective members and yourself. This is critical if we wish to continue building trail towards Hillsdale County. We need to educate the citizens of Calhoun County and drum up support. Hoof it over to Marshall September 6th! Fred Miller is arranging carpools from Kalamazoo. Call him 323-9724. Dave Cornell (623-8659) will be arranging carpools from Delton.

Treasurer’s Report

Bob Benham is still in Michigan and reports we have $1,451.15 as of this meeting.

Trail Adopters

Lynn Waldron reports that we have marked up a set of maps indicating where our trail adopters have trail they are maintaining. These will be posted in our trailer. So come on out on a work day and check it out. If you wish to adopt some trail, please contact Neil Juhl.

Activities

Barb VanDyken is looking for nominations for "Heart and Sole", our chapter's contribution to our national publication to honor one of our volunteers.

Trails Day

This was Janet Wolfe's first meeting, and lo and behold, she volunteered to head up our Trails Day committee! See how fun these meetings are? Thanks Janet!! Currently, the date is for June 2, 2001, and the time and location have not been set.

Trails Report

  • The trail from Yankee Springs to M-37 is complete! Whooo hoooo!
  • The kiosk at Bassett Lake road has been vandalized ... again. We plan on putting up more.
  • Discussed maintaining the Kellogg Forest and improving our signage on our trail.
  • The large, brown signs "North Country National Scenic Trail" will go up on M-179 soon!
  • Working on re-flagging the Fort Custer National Cemetery and meeting with "the powers that be" for approval.

One of our goals is to completely blue blaze our trail, even on roads, from the Kent/Barry county line to the Calhoun/County Line. We are pleased to introduce our BLUE BLAZERS, who are painstakingly painting our trail:

Teri Agostini BLUE BLAZER NORTH

Sheryl Drenth BLUE BLAZER CENTRAL

John Rudnicki BLUE BLAZER SOUTH

Next time you see one of the above, shake their hand, but be sure they have washed theirs of paint!

Work days

August 26 and September 9th

Meet at Prairieville Inn at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast, 8:00 a.m. to carpool.

HOOF IT!

Recently, our Battle Creek Trail Crew explored a few parcels of land that would make an excellent off road hike. On September 23, 2000, you are invited to meet at the Ott Preserve and hike Kimball Pines, Riverside Park, and Bridge Park. Look for times and more details in our September newsletter! This will be an approximately three mile hike and we will arrange carpools.

Millennium Trails Celebration

On September 3d in the Mackinaw City area, the North Country Trail will be convening for meetings and good times. Come on up for the annual Bridge Walk and wear your North Country attire. Rumor has it that if you search hard enough and don't mind roughing it, there are first come first serve campgrounds available on either side of the bridge.

New Website Manager

Gail Speer has volunteered to be our website manager. We all gave her a round of applause! It was not a standing applause because Charles Krammin was lurking in the back of the room (refer back to the crowd we had) and we were afraid we would lose our seat to him! Welcome Gail! You can contact her at grspeer(@iserv.net
