On a trip to Lake Sakakawea we visited three sites of historic interest in connection with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The first was the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, under the care of the National Park Service. Here we got an up-close look at a reconstructed earthlodge, the typical ancient home design of the Hidatsa tribe. The Hidatsa adopted Sacagawea, the Indian woman who accompanied Lewis and Clark and served as their interpreter on their historic expedition into the Northwest. (Visit the Knife River Indian Villages Web site for more information, including images and a video clip.) |
