NCNST through the City of
Marshall
Here is a map or aerial image (your
choice!) showing the track of the North Country
National Scenic Trail through the City of Marshall in
Calhoun County.
The color code:
-
The
green
track shows the road/street walk path of the NCNST as the Trail enters the
city
from the east along River Road and accesses the Marshall Riverwalk
where it crosses South Marshall Avenue.
-
The yellow track
(waypoints 2 to 4) shows the Riverwalk
spur to its east end at Stuart's Landing.
-
The red track shows the
Riverwalk along
the Kalamazoo River between South Marshall Avenue and South
Kalamazoo Avenue.
-
The
light blue track (between waypoints 11 and 12)
shows the spur from the main Riverwalk up to Monroe Street.
-
The
dark blue track shows the street/road walk on South Kalamazoo Avenue and
West Hughes
Street to the west city limits where it continues on A Drive North on its
way west to Emmett Township and Battle Creek.
By playing with the drop-down menus in the upper right corner of the map image
you can:
-
tone down the background layer
to better visualize details on the ground, and
-
select whether the background
layer is a Google™ street map, terrain map, a satellite image, or a topo
map, among others. Scroll the image to the right if necessary to activate the
background layer selection menu
You can also zoom in or out or drag
the image to change the center point. Zooming in, then click 'n dragging
the map in whichever direction you want, makes it easier to make sense of the
marked waypoints, which are a bit bunched together otherwise.
For full screen map:
for a full-screen version of this map on a satellite image background — which, as
noted above, you can change to another background if you prefer. Click on a yellow diamond for
information about the related waypoint. To locate a waypoint on the
map from the list on the right, click on the yellow diamond in the list.
To return to this page, click on your browser's "go back" button.
You can
download a PDF version of this map on a Google Street map background to print out and take with you on the
Riverwalk.
Note: Some backgrounds,
such as the ArcGIS World topo map, make it appear that the Trail is in
the Kalamazoo River, particularly if you zoom in close. Rest
assured, you do not need a kayak
or hip boots in order to follow the Riverwalk trail along the river.
Some maps seem to show the Kalamazoo
River being considerably wider bank-to-bank than it is in real life. The
GPS trail track is pretty much where it's supposed to be. It's the upper
bank of the river that's in the wrong place on some maps. The satellite and
aerial images and the topo map are more accurate.
Trail Notes:
-
The NCNST on the Marshall
Riverwalk is not yet marked as NCNST certified trail, so you will not
yet find blue blazes or other NPS signage at this time. We're working
on this.
-
The NCNST follows the Riverwalk
(the red track on the map) from South Marshall Avenue to South Kalamazoo
Avenue. From this segment, the Trail becomes a connector trail going
east to Albion and west to Historic Bridge Park in Emmett Township.
