NCNST through the Kellogg Biological Station

Here is a map or aerial image (your choice!) showing the track of the North Country National Scenic Trail through Michigan State University's W. K. Kellogg Biological Station in Kalamazoo County.

Note the following regarding this map:

  • The red track shows the entire pathway of the NCNST through KBS including the new-reroute north of B Avenue up to Baseline Road.  The new reroute runs between waypoints #10 and #16.

  • The green track shows road up to the new barn housing KBS's new robotic milking system.  According to plans, this will be a future spur from the Trail whereby hikers will be able to walk up to the barn and get a view of the robotic milking system in operation.

The new re-route from B Avenue to Baseline Road is an entirely off-road trail.  It received the requisite approvals this summer (2009) and was laid out and marked with red flags.  Its construction was largely completed on September 26, 2009.  Some detail work including some benching and the marking of the trail route with NCNST's blue blazes and Carsonite posts will be completed soon, with further enhancements including placement of educational kiosks to follow.  At Baseline Road the NCNST becomes a roadwalk connector trail heading west on Baseline and then north into Barry County.

By playing with the drop-down menus in the upper right corner of the map image you can

  • tone down the background layer to better visualize details on the ground, and

  • select whether the background layer is a Google™ road map, terrain map, a satellite image, or a USGS topo map.  Scroll the image to the right if necessary to activate the background layer selection menu

By using the map tool in the upper left corner you can also zoom in or out, and you can drag the image to change the center point.  Zooming in, then click 'n dragging the map in whichever direction you want, makes it easier to make sense of the marked waypoints, which in places are a bit bunched together otherwise.
