NCNST in the Barry State Game Area (south segment)

Here is a map or aerial image (your choice!) showing the current track of the North Country National Scenic Trail through the southern portion of the Barry State Game Area between McKibben Road and Norris Road in Barry County.

In the map displayed here, the Trail track is overlaid on a topo map of the area.  You can change the background to a Google satellite image, a USGS aerial image, a plain-Jane Google Street map, or other backgrounds, by making your selection from the right-hand drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the map image.

You can tone down the background layer to better visualize details on the ground by changing the percentage value in the other drop-down menu right next to the background selector.

Scroll the image to the right (using the bottom scroll bar) if necessary to activate the background layer selection menu to the right of the map image.

By using the map tool in the upper left corner you can also zoom in or out, and you can drag the image to change the center point.  With some of our maps, zooming in, then click 'n dragging the map in whichever direction you want, makes it easier to make sense of the marked waypoints, which in some cases are a bit bunched together otherwise.

Note regarding this map:
●  The Google street map does not reflect the fact that this North Country Trail segment between McKibben Road and Norris Road lies entirely within the Barry State Game Area.  Therefore hikers are subject to all state land use regulations and are responsible for having up-to-date information regarding these regulations and fully complying with them.  It is a hunting area, so take suitable precautions if you wish to hike this trail during hunting season.  (See below.)
●  Be aware that there is not 100% agreement on the names of some of the roads in this area.  If you need to call for assistance, ensure that the agency you contact has a clear idea of where you are.  For instance, the 2-track road which the Trail crosses at Waypoint #10 is shown on some maps as "Wildwood Road" and on others as "West Sager Trail."  The paved north-south road which the Trail crosses at Waypoint #14 is properly called "Norris Road", but some maps and some local residents also call it "Yankee Springs Road" even though, strictly speaking, Yankee Springs Road ends at Norris Road further north.
●  Trail condition update:  As of January 2012, east of Norris Road the NCNST off-road trail runs between Norris Road and McKibben Road.  South of the McKibben Road trailhead the Trail is a connector trail roadwalk running between this point and Kellogg Biological Station at the north edge of Kalamazoo County.  In the past the Trail at the McKibben Road trailhead used to cross McKibben Road and continue as off-road trail down to Mullen Road, then continue on further south through private land east of Stewart Lake down to Keller Road.  It became necessary to abandon the off-road trail east and south of the McKibben Road and revert to a roadwalk.  If you are hiking south, from the McKibben Road trailhead you should follow McKibben Road south to Mullen Road, Mullen Road west to Norris Road, then Norris Road south through Prairieville and on to Kalamazoo County.

Hunting area:  Note that this Trail section is in a State Game Area:
•  Exercise courtesy, common sense and caution when hiking in hunting areas during hunting season.
•  We recommend avoiding hunting areas altogether during firearm deer season November 15-30
•  During hunting season, wear blaze orange garments and/or head covering that are clearly visible 360° around you.
•  Keep pets on a leash.
•  Stay on the trail.
•  See the Department of Natural Resources & Environment Web site re: dates of hunting seasons.
