NCNST Connector — Battle
Creek Linear Park & Ft Custer
Here is a map or aerial image (your
choice!) showing the current track of the North Country
National Scenic Trail roadwalk between the west end of the Battle Creek
Linear Park/NCNST section and the east end of the Fort Custer National
Cemetery section in Kalamazoo County. (See also a map of the
Battle Creek Linear Park, provided by the City of Battle Creek, and our
adjacent map of the NCNST through Fort Custer
National Cemetery.)
The color code:
-
The red track shows the NCNST connector
option following Brady and Dickman Roads to Armstrong Road
and going north on Armstrong to the Armstrong Road trailhead into the
Fort Custer National Cemetery Trail section.
-
The
green track shows the NCNST connector option going along River
Road to Armstrong Road and going south on Armstrong to the
trailhead.
In the map displayed here, the Trail
track is overlaid on a simple Google street map. You can change
the background to a topo map, a USGS aerial image, a satellite image, or a
satellite image hybrid showing street/road names, by
making your selection from the right-hand drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the map image.
You can tone down the background layer
to better visualize details on the ground by changing the percentage value
in the other drop-down menu right next to the background selector.
Scroll the image to the right (using
the bottom scroll bar) if necessary to activate the
background layer selection menu to the right of the map image.
By using the map tool in the upper
left corner you can also zoom in or out, and you can drag
the image to change the center point. With some of our maps, zooming in, then click 'n dragging
the map in whichever direction you want, makes it easier to make sense of the
marked waypoints, which in some cases are a bit bunched together otherwise.

Trail note(s):
-
Hikers can choose either of two
connector routes between the Armstrong Road trailhead at the east end of the
Fort Custer Trail section and the west end of the Battle Creek Linear Park —
either a roadwalk along River Road or a more off-road walk on paved trail
along Dickman and Brady Roads. Both options require a roadwalk along
Armstrong Road. Armstrong Road is on the north-south county line
between Calhoun and Kalamazoo Counties.
-
Vehicular traffic on River Road
generally is not heavy, so the River Road roadwalk is relatively low-risk.
Armstrong Road can be busy during the times of shift changes at the
veterans' facility, and the shoulders are limited, especially in the winter,
so walk with caution on that section.
