| Bud Leonard described how Prairieville was something of a hub for ancient Native American trails. The trail came up to Prairieville from Kalamazoo. One trail went north through Middleville to Grand Rapids. Another trail went east to Irving, crossed the Thornapple and then down to Hastings, across the river again and on to Charlotte and Jackson south. It connected with a network of trails in the east side of the state coming up from Ohio and going over to Detroit and Windsor where the forts were located. These trails served as ancient trade routes for transport of such materials as flint used to make arrowheads. | |||
