The North Country National Scenic Trail stretches from Crown Point in eastern New York state to Lake Sakakawea in western North Dakota.  Built and maintained primarily by volunteers of the North Country Trail Association, its planned route of 4,625 miles will make it the longest of the country's eight National Scenic Trails.

Welcome to the Butler County Chapter Home Page

As one of Pennsylvania's five NCTA chapters, the Butler is responsible for building, maintaining, and promoting our section of the North Country Trail.  We also seek to promote outdoor activities and lifestyles in and around our area of Butler, Pennsylvania.

The North Country Trail in Pennsylvania runs from the Allegheny National Forest southwest to the border with Ohio.  Our section of the NCT begins at Moraine State Park  Butler Country and  continues to the Old Stone House on PA State Route 8. Then is jumps to Pleasant Valley Road

One of the best 10 miles of trail in Western Pennsylvania is located northeast of Butler. It is between Route 308 and Route 38. The Branchton Road; splits Pennsylvania Gamelands #95. What will you see? You will see the Glades Water Fowl area near Moniteau High School and possibly see eagles. You will hike through a Propagation Area and see a beautiful lake. Part of this section of the trail was built by the Moniteau High School students as a project. Of course you'll see a lot of beautiful scenery along sections of this trail, huge boulders from years ago and walk through mine reclamation area that the Pennsylvania Game Commission has worked on restoring strip mining areas and examples of what they've done and how they've done it. You will follow a hundred-year-old railroad bed. You will come to an area that has over 200 feet of puncheon, because of the beaver activity. You'll see beaver dams and cross over two beautiful hiking bridges built by the volunteers of the North Country Trail Association. It's a moderate hike as far as difficulty; there is no camping along it. There is easy shuttle access and trailhead parking. There are several convenience stores along the way or near trailheads, to buy a coffee or snacks. Hikers have seen bear, deer, and signs of coyotes. There are many restaurants to stop in after your hike in the Butler area. The trail is very well marked; there are signs telling you the distance between different sections of the trail . This trail was built by volunteers of the North Country Trail Association. If you would like more information on this section of the trail and the NCTA, please see the Contacts section of this website.

The Butler Chapter's next meeting:

Our new meeting schedule is now in effect. We are now holding regular member meetings 3 times a year. These meetings will therefore be important to attend if you want to be actively involved in chapter activities. During off meeting months we will schedule hikes and special events (perhaps a dinner or trip to an outdoor related event).

Meetings are usually the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 PM at the
Butler YMCA
Washington Street, Butler
Topics to be covered at the next Butler Chapter meeting include: trail adopter(s) for the west section of PA State Gamelands 95, volunteer hour reporting, hike and trail maintenance schedule for spring, other NCTA events in Pennsylvania, chapter by-laws, and more.

This meeting is followed by the Butler Outdoor Club meeting
